This file format enables you to save a greater number of images using the same amount of hard disk space as the other file formats. To create such a small file size, a form of compression is used that irreversibly affects the quality of the image. Page 23 Next, modify elements that affect only localized areas, such as blemishes and small distracting elements. Then, apply effects that add a style or mood to the image.
Finally, prepare the image for output by resizing and sharpening. Following these simple guidelines can help improve the quality of your images and provide a more structured approach to enhancing your images. The print function is both easy and powerful, enabling you to create high quality, fully color managed prints.
You can select Print… from the File menu at any time to print the current image, or you can select multiple images from within the Browser palette to create a print package. If desired, check the Crop Photos to Fit option to ensure the entire printable surface is utilized. Page 27 Check the Use Output Resolution option. Page Batch Processing Batch Processing Batch processing is the automatic application of one or more enhancements to a series of images.
Typically, a photographer will use a batch process to apply a predefined series of adjustments to several images at once. Capture NX 2 contains even more methods of batch processing than before.
You will then be presented with the Batch Process dialog. Click on the Browse… button in the Source section and locate the folder of images you wish to process. Page 32 Check the Rename box if you would like to change the name of the processed files. Click on the Edit… button to call up the File Naming dialog and determine the naming convention for the processed images.
Use the Select File Format pull-down menu to select the file format for the processed images. To select all of the images in the current folder, navigate to the Edit menu and choose Select All.

Both cache systems speed up the interaction of Capture NX 2 by storing processed information on the hard disk, enabling Capture NX 2 to use the cached information instead of reprocessing the files.
The browsing cache is used for the thumbnails created and displayed in the Browser palette, while the editing cache is used for NEF files saved during editing. Page 49 With the default settings, Capture NX 2 will utilize up to 2 gigabytes of hard disk space to store cache files.
If all 2 gigabytes of allocated space are utilized by cache files, Capture NX 2 will begin to replace the oldest cache files with new cache files. You can click on any of the available presets to display the contents in the field editor, duplicate the preset using the Duplicate button, or delete the preset using the Delete button. Page Labels Labels Label Compatibility Use the Label Compatibility pull-down menu if you use another digital asset management software application to tag and sort your images.
Capture NX 2 supports a number of digital asset management software applications. If you select the appropriate option from the pull-down menu, Capture NX 2 will be able to read the label and rating information added by that application.
Page Available Labels Available Labels The maximum number of labels available depends on the selection in the Label Compatibility pull-down menu. You can choose the number of labels to display by clicking on the radio button next to the desired number of labels. Manage Settings The Manage Settings section enables you to determine which settings are displayed within the Load Adjustments sub-menu of the Batch menu.
By default, Capture NX 2 provides you with four different workspaces. Page Finding Palettes Finding Palettes Undocking many palettes can sometimes make it difficult to locate that palette. All palettes and windows can be located using the Window menu.

Easy-to-use display formats Capture NX-D supports a variety of displays for the efficient processing of images. The other consideration to make when shooting RAW is computer horsepower.
For the purposes of this book, you can think of a NEF file as being a container with multiple partitions– sort of like one of those plastic food containers with compartments for different foods. This part of the RAW file is never overwritten. The metadata includes information about the image, such as shutter speed, aperture, time, date, and more. Usually additional areas in this section can be filled in by certain computer applications. For example, there are placeholders for keywords, copyright information, and captioning.
Third-party RAW converters typically read only the white-balance information and discard the other instructions. The embedded JPEG image is produced by the camera and reflects the in-camera settings that were active when the image was taken. For example, I have a few custom banks set up in my cameras that allow me to quickly tailor images for landscapes, portraits, or wildlife shots.
The Shooting Menu is designated by a camera icon in your camera menus. It is where you will find all the major parameters that affect image processing and quality, such as ISO, white balance, and sharpening. If you are using one of the newer Nikon DSLRs introduced after October , many of the image parameters are in the camera section called Picture Control.
Here is a list of the camera settings that you should consider when setting up for a shoot. However, you may have some additional options, depending on the camera you use. This can be useful when you are trying to preview lots of files on a less powerful computer or a laptop. If you choose a small, highly compressed JPEG, some of the image details may not be readily apparent when you review the image on your camera LCD.
RAW Compression- should you use it? So Nikon has some options where you can choose to compress your NEFs and save on file space. Nikon offers two forms compression in its NEF file format, depending on the camera you use. If you set white balance incorrectly, you could have unnaturally blue or orange images due to extremes in color temperature.
You can use that gray card image later on in Capture NX2 to really nail white balance and copy the settings to the other images in the series more on that later. Long Exposure NR This setting allows your camera to take a second exposure with the shutter closed, and then subtract any sensor noise caused by something called dark current. It is very useful for getting perfectly black skies during long night exposures. This is one setting that cannot be altered in post-processing there is no way for the camera to take a second exposure after the fact.
As a result, noise in shadow areas often becomes noticeable. First of all, you can get more control over noise removal in Capture NX2, or by using dedicated noise removal software. Second, NR requires much more computer horsepower when you render your image. Depending on your camera model, you might not be able to disable NR in the camera menus.
Camera Settings or Picture Controls? In late , Nikon introduced a new form of adjusting the in-camera settings, called Picture Control. Each of these starting points can be modified and saved in your camera. The Picture Control presets differ in their contrast, saturation, and sharpness settings. You can also customize the sharpness, contrast, saturation and hue for any Picture Control preset.
You can compare the looks of each preset when you process your image in Capture NX2. Sharpening Sharpening is the one parameter that I adjust on each image individually, depending on its final output destination print, web and size. Depending on your camera, sharpening is either in the Camera Settings menu or in the Picture Controls. Sharpening routines can have profound effects on image quality, and must be done with care. Fortunately, quality sharpening is one of the strengths of Capture NX2.
For JPEG shooting, this is a critical setting. Too much contrast will mean that shadow and highlight details may clip and be rendered unrecoverable. I personally use the Adobe RGB space.
It offers a much wider color space than sRGB and is well suited for ink jet printers. For more about color spaces, check out a book on color management. Depending on your camera model, the color mode setting may also affect your choice of Color Space.
Note the stronger reds and greens in Mode III. Mode I can be utilized to make a fairly vivid image of people while still getting natural looking skin tones.
Mode III color not only increases the color saturation, but it boosts reds and greens. So where should you set the color?
Ultimately, it depends on your subject. Good for portraits. Good as an all-around setting. Useful for landscape shots. Not recommended for portraits!
Standard sharpening and contrast. Can be modified for other effects, like sepiatone. For more on Picture Control settings, refer to Chapter 8. Hue Adjustment This setting allows photographers to change the way colors are perceived by their camera. If, for example, your photos showed a greenish cast, you could theoretically compensate for it by making a hue adjustment.
This is one feature that I never use in my camera, as it affects all the colors in the image. The next step is up to you. Go out and start filling up some memory cards with NEF files. This box allows you to choose the location of where that TIFF file is saved. Folder for temporary data For optimum performance, set this to a directory on a secondary hard disk drive. Color Management Preferences Proper color management is essential to digital workflow.
In this dialog, you can adjust how Capture NX2 handles color profiles. While I recommend the Pro Photo RGB space for editing, it is important to understand the basics of color management and how it can impact your workflow. Many printers install custom profiles based on different paper types and print settings.
Therefore I have chosen the appropriate Epson profile from the drop-down box. I recommend setting the black clip point to 0. Cache Preferences This section allows you to set the directories and size limits for the various Capture NX2 cache files. For best performance, put the cache directory on a secondary hard disk instead of your primary drive. Limiting the cache size will keep the number of cached images lower and retain space on your hard disk. You can choose one of the presets, or set your own label values.
Manage Settings Use this dialog box to manage your saved settings files. You can add and delete settings files from the list, and you can also make settings visible in contextual menu shortcuts by enabling the checkbox next to a setting.
Use custom workspaces to tailor the Capture NX2 interface to suit your needs. Setting your cache file directories to the secondary hard drive improves data throughput and speeds up the application. Not only will this arrangement improve Capture NX2 performance, but it will probably improve the overall performance of your PC. I always disable color noise reduction in my cameras because applying the in-camera NR settings to your images slows down Capture NX2 performance.
I do use noise reduction, but I do it at a later stage in my editing workflow. Of course, my workflow is based around editing small numbers of images one at a time in Capture NX2, and my routine for noise reduction is generally tailored for each image.
A few new features were added to allow the user to customize the interface to suit their needs. The most obvious new feature of the Capture NX2 interface is workspaces. You can choose from one of four pre-configured workspaces depending on what you are using the application for. In the Browser workspace, the file directory tab on the left side of the screen is expanded.
The Metadata workspace defaults to a list view of your image thumbnails. This workspace is useful if you are adding keywords and other metadata to your images in NX 2. The multi-purpose workspace displays the editing palettes on the right-hand side of the screen, and has the browser window open on the left-hand side of the screen. The multi-purpose workspace is ideal for users who want to browse and edit images simultaneously. All the palettes on the left-hand side of the screen are collapsed.
The available choices will vary depending which workspace is displayed on your primary monitor. I use full-screen mode the most often as the gray background is useful for viewing colors accurately on the screen. Facing Page: Full screen mode top and Presentation mode bottom are additional ways to view your images. My goal for each of the subsequent chapters is to go through the processing of a NEF file in the order in which I apply adjustments and operations.
Keep in mind that Capture NX2 like many other image editing applications has numerous tools and many of them can be used to achieve similar effects. My intention is to work my way through the tools that I use most frequently, in the order of operation that is appropriate for optimal image output.
The long and winding road In the journey that is editing a NEF file, no one should be without a road map.
It is always important to know, even if just at a rudimentary level, where you are trying to go. In fact, most images rarely require the use of every point on my editing road map, and can be adjusted with just a few quick steps.
Another reason why it is good to have a road map of editing workflow is because the approach you take to post-processing should involve some visualization. Before he went into the darkroom, Ansel Adams always had an idea of what he wanted to convey in his print.
His goal was to convey in his print what he saw and felt when he captured his exposure in the field. Therefore, I feel it is important, as digital photographers, not to get caught up in trying to apply every tool and effect to a digital image just because our software has those tools.
These adjustments often revolve around the fundamental operation of converting the raw sensor data to an RGB image. Think of the RAW Adjustments as the foundation upon which all your other adjustments will be built upon. A classic example is dodging and burning, where you are adjusting the contrast of certain parts of your image beyond what was obtained in the original exposure. Other applications either do not permit local application of effects or require complex masking schemes to apply them.
From there, the master image can be further refined for printing or other output. However, most photographs are judged by their final output, which usually involves a print.
Final output could involve resizing the image for use on a website, or sending it in an email to friends and family. First, it gives you a good outline of the kinds of adjustments you can be thinking about when you first approach an image to work on.
Second, it puts the adjustments into the proper order that will maximize your image quality and minimize your frustration. Keep in mind that Capture NX2 editing workflow is linear, starting with the Develop Section and continuing with the order of the steps in the Adjust Section. Does that mean you need to stick to this script rigidly?
Of course not. The rest of the book contains lots of details about numerous Capture NX2 editing tools, but in reality, the overall image editing process is quite straightforward. The following pages will take you through the basic image editing procedure to help you understand the simplicity of image processing in Capture NX2. After a few seconds, the image should appear. I chose this image because it illustrates some of the advantages of shooting in RAW.
First of all, my default settings applied far too much contrast to this image, especially because the subjects are back-lit. Too much contrast! The first item in the list is White Balance.
Because the in-camera setting I used was too warm yellow , we can override it here. This gives a look with strong contrast– bad for people pictures! This will collapse the Develop Section. The image turns gray. This will boost the midtone brightness of the image. Drag the black threshold level slider until you see dark areas appear. A Color Control Point is added to the image. The actual settings you choose will depend on your camera model. You can now add embedded XMP data, like star ratings, to your images.
Even better is the fact that the star ratings and color labels you add in the NX 2 browser can be read by other applications that use the star-rating system, like Adobe Bridge and Photo Mechanic. Sub- folders will appear in the browser; double-click on a folder icon in the browser to open it. A shortcut to that folder will be created in the Favorites list. This will collapse the Folder list and expand the metadata tab on the left side of the screen.
This allows other applications to read the embedded data. For example, you could use one color to indicate files that have been processed, and another color to indicate files that have not been processed.
For example, you can create a preset to apply your contact information to your images. In the Thumbnail List view, images are shown as small thumbnails in a list that includes file data, star ratings, labels, date shot, and more. The Thumbnail List view is useful when you want to quickly sort your images on any one of the file data columns in the list. Use the Thumbnail Grid view when you want to view the largest possible thumbnails.
Use the zoom slider or the zoom tool to increase thumbnail size. Leave the right-hand triangle on the fifth star. For example, in a folder of mixed file types, you might only want to display JPEGs. By default, images in the File Browser are sorted by Name. Clicking the header one time will sort in ascending order, clicking a second time will allow you to sort the images in descending order. The triangle icon is pointed up.
The triangle icon is pointed down. Use batch operations for saving multiple files, applying saved settings files to multiple images, and for copying and pasting settings between files. Source– this is the location folder of the files you wish to process. Settings– check this box if you wish to apply a saved settings file to the files selected for batch saving.
You can choose settings presets from the drop- down list at right. Conflict management: Use this drop- down menu to choose whether to override existing settings in the source files, or to simply append new settings. File renaming: Check this box if you wish to save a copy of the file with a different name. Use this dialog to enter a naming convention. File Format: Choose the type of file format to save the batched files as.
For NEFs, you can specify compression options. Destination: Choose the folder to where the batched files will be saved.
Leave blank if you want to save the batched files into the source folder. Capture NX2 will periodically check the contents of the Watched Folder, and when new files are detected, a batch process will be automatically performed on those files. Underneath the Watched folder options are controls that set the behavior of the application– you can choose to run batches immediately, or have NX 2 check the Watched Folder at a standard interval.
Idea: You could create a folder on your computer where you drop images that you want to batch save as JPEGs. The processing dialog will open. You can always process the RAW files separately if you want later on. Note: you can also right- click on the image thumbnail and use the contextual menus to choose the copy and paste commands.
Notes on Batching: You can also access the batch commands by using the Batch Icon at the lower- left corner of the File Browser window, or by using the Batch Icon at the upper-right corner of the Edit List when you are viewing an opened image in the Edit View.
Why does batching in NX seem so much slower compared to other applications? Specifically, the goal of making RAW adjustments is to make the baseline changes to global color, contrast, and brightness upon which all other adjustments will be built.
The Develop Section cannot leverage image cache files to speed up processing. Therefore, it is important to consider which adjustments can only be made in the Develop Step and consider making other adjustments in the Adjust Section of the Edit List. However, because the Develop tools do involve the actual processing of RAW data, the results are usually higher quality than if you were to perform the same adjustment in the Adjust Section of the Edit List.
Why not Noise Reduction? White balance, by comparison, is a fundamental parameter of how the RAW data are processed. Before you jump in to the Develop Section, ask yourself what it is you are trying to convey in your image. It is also where you can access the White Balance Controls. Quick Fix: This area is new to Capture NX2 and is expanded by default, as shown in the image at right.
Some of these tools are automatically applied. Controls There are four primary areas within the Camera Settings section: 1 White Balance Controls: Use these controls to override the as-shot white balance setting from your camera. Evaluating WB is probably one of the first things you should do when examining your image before processing it.
You can set this parameter to further fine-tune your WB setting using the lower pull-down menu. Move the slider to the left to make the image more blue cooler ; slide it to the right to make the image more orange warmer. You can use white balance creatively to change the mood of an image. Take one image with the gray card in the scene, then shoot normally without the card. The Gray Point settings will appear. Move the mouse over your image– you should see an eyedropper icon appear.
A note about gray cards: Lots of pocket gray cards are available, but a really handy one is the Whibal card, because it is very small and the gray color goes all the way through the card. That way, if it were to become scratched, the card would not lose effectiveness.
Left: Original image. Because you can control all the parameters in the Non-Picture Control dialog with Picture Controls, I recommend switching to the Picture Control dialog using the drop-down menu. A D40 image and D image processed with the same Picture Control settings will have the same look, just as two images from different film cameras shot with the same kind of film would.
Are you shooting a portrait, where you want to capture subtle tones, or a landscape, where you want saturated colors and strong contrast? Before you continue processing your NEF, you need to decide which preset for Picture Control gives you the best starting point for reproducing the feeling you had when you captured your image in the camera.
For images taken in bright sun in high-contrast conditions, Vivid may seem over the top. The Standard Picture Control preset has a moderate level of contrast, saturation, and sharpness.
Images processed using Picture Control will appear brighter than those processed using Non-Picture Control. The processing algorithm in the Picture Control software appears to boost midtones and increase saturation as compared to images processed without Picture Control.
The one parameter I recommend changing is to set Sharpening to zero 0. Setting sharpening to zero allows you to apply sharpening at the end of the Edit List workflow without sharpening the image a second time. Other than turning off sharpening, the rest of the Picture Controls are entirely optional for most images. The Quick Adjust Slider changes multiple parameters simultaneously.
The Sharpening adjustment in Picture Control can be set from anywhere from zero no sharpening to nine high sharpening. You can control the sharpening settings by moving the sharpening slider right or left. The actual amount of sharpening applied will depend on the image, and is unpredictable. Any sharpening setting above 5 can result in artifacts halos in your image; so use it with care. If you are using the Capture Sharpening presets included with this eBook, be sure to set the Picture Control sharpening to a value of zero.
It is often too easy to over-sharpen. Doing so will disable the Contrast Slider. This flexibility can be useful if you are trying to extract the most dynamic range from your image. Changing this control affects primarily the midtones of your image. Alternatively, setting the brightness control to -1 will darken the midtones in your image.
A value of zero is the default setting for Saturation Control. The Preset you choose determines the starting point, the slider control allows you to fine-tune the saturation around that starting point. Because Picture Control Saturation 0 neutral saturation is based on in- camera settings, saturation cannot be adjusted as finely as you can with other NX tools, like the LCH editor.
Setting the saturation value to -3 does not result in a grayscale image; the sliders are meant to be a fine-tuning and not a large-scale adjustment. Moving the Hue slider to the left negative values shifts the hue towards magenta tones. If you move the slider to the right positive values , the hue shifts towards greenish tones. An interesting observation is that while reds and greens shift significantly with hue adjustments, the Hue 0 neutral blue tones are changed far less.
Color filters alter the contrast in black and white images– they lighten parts of the image that are the same color of the filter while darkening their complementary color. Orange Filter Applied 2 Your image will be modified.
In this example, the orange and red filters darken the blue sky while keeping the foreground light. A primary example of a toned image is a Sepiatone effect. Not only will you be able to quickly access your saved settings, but you can upload them to cameras that support Picture Control.
Type a name in the naming field and then click OK to continue. Follow the procedures for creating a settings file described in the Workflow section of this book.
This is not something that I recommend; but the utility is there if you want to use it. Use the Sample Image on the left hand side of the window as your guide.
Choose your new preset from the drop- down list, and it will be applied to your NEF. At the time of this writing, only the Nikon D3 and D cameras support this feature. Transferring your custom Picture Control settings to your camera can be a real time saver. For example, if you have developed a modified Picture Control setting in Capture NX2, you can then load it into your camera and save time with the post-processing of future images. Likewise, if you have modified Picture Control settings and saved them in your camera, you can load them into Capture NX2 for easy selection on your computer.
Repeat these steps to export additional presets. Eject the memory card from your card reader and insert it into your camera. You will see a list of the presets loaded onto the card. Choose a preset and click OK. The preset will load, showing the custom settings. Click OK when you are done. The reverse of this procedure can be used to save presets from your camera to a memory card.
Why is this important? You can get much better results and faster performance by applying Noise Reduction later on in the editing workflow. If your camera offers Active D-Lighting Control and it was enabled at the time of shooting, the Active D-Lighting settings will override the contrast and brightness settings in Picture Control.
For me, the most useful tools are the Exposure Compensation slier and the Highlight and Shadow protection tools. The saturation slider allows for a much more subtle adjustment of color intensity than what you can do in Picture Control. In order to properly use the Quick Fix section, you should have at least a basic understanding of how to use the image histogram. Despite the fact that exposure adjustments are a very powerful tool and unique to RAW files , you still must be careful. Severely over or underexposed images may Correcting an overexposed image. However, the overall image is quite usable. In this image, the overall exposure is good, but the face still needs lightening with local adjustments. Or Left-shift too dark worse, you might have an image where highlights are pushing the right-hand edge of the histogram, Clipped highlights but the image is a little bit underexposed.
In this example left , not only are there blown highlights, but the overall image is slightly underexposed. The image histogram right confirms this. The image will turn black, and blown highlights will be in color the color represents the channel that is clipping– Red, Green or Blue.
First, exposure was increased by 0. Then, Highlight Protection was dialed in until the clipped highlights disappeared right. The corrected image below is ready for further processing. Strong amounts of highlight protection can sometimes cause color saturation to decrease.
This effect can be fixed with the Saturation slider in Quick Fix. What this means is that you try to avoid blown highlights at all cost, even at the expense of some lost shadow detail. This is very useful when you are applying minus negative exposure compensation to an image to recover highlights and then want In this image, the overall exposure looks OK, but the shadows are just a little dark to get the shadow details for my taste.
Move the Shadow Peak showing dark tones Protection slider to the right to recover shadow details. I rarely go above Histogram looks OK overall. Adjust the Saturation slider to the right to compensate for the loss of saturation when using the Shadow Protection slider.
Notice how the peaks in the middle of the histogram got taller. The best way to adjust brightness and contrast is by adjusting Levels and Curves. You can make basic levels and curves adjustments in the Quick Fix palette. The positive side of this technique is that the adjustments are made on the RAW data.
Principles of Levels Adjustment The Levels control can be used to adjust overall image contrast and brightness. The Levels controls are three triangles sliders beneath the image histogram in the Quick Fix window. Normally, the black point slider is all the way to the left on the histogram. The tonal value the black point slider rests on gets converted to a tonal value of zero pure black.
As tonal values fall to the left of the black point slider they are converted to pure black. White Point Slider: The white point slider is on the right hand side of the histogram.
Tonal values that fall to the right of the white point slider are rendered as pure white tonal value of As you move the white point slider to the left, you convert tonal values to white.
You can do this easily with the levels tool by bringing the black point and white point sliders closer together. The middle slider affects the midtones of the image.
Slide it to the right to darken midtones, slide it to the left to brighten midtones. Notice how the Curves Control bends when you slide the midpoint slider. Brighter midtones Darker midtones Curves If you want to use the Curves tool, simply click a point on the Curve Control line and drag the point up or down. Dragging a point on the curve upward lightens its corresponding tonal values, dragging the curve downward darkens the corresponding tone values.
If you add multiple points to the curve, the steepness of the line dictates contrast between any two points. Steep lines mean high contrast, flat lines mean low contrast. Use the curves tool with care. Click points on the curve and then drag them to move. The steeper you make the line, the stronger the contrast will be in that part of the tonal range. Another reason to use the Saturation slider in Quick Fix is because it gives more control than the Picture Controls.
By default, the Saturation slider is set at zero unchanged. When you couple the Quick Fix tools with the Camera Settings, more often than not you can make all the global adjustments you need to your image. Although it contains some useful tools, they rarely come into the equation when processing NEFs. Of those two tools, the Auto Color Aberration tool is enabled by default and I leave it on at all times.
The other tools in this set are for special circumstances and I rarely need to use them. Note: This operation is processor-intensive and will take some time to complete. Refer to your camera manual for instruction on how to create the reference image. Make sure the folder you choose has a NDF file in it. If not, navigate to the folder containing a dust- off reference image and click Open. Note: This feature is processor intensive. Personally, I just try to keep my sensor clean and use the Auto Retouch Brush in the Edit List to eliminate dust spots.
Color aberration, also referred to as chromatic aberration, manifests itself as purple or red fringing around high- contrast areas in your images. This is especially common in the corners of images produced using wide-angle lenses. One of the nicest features of Capture NX2 is that it automatically removes color-fringing from your NEFs, regardless of the make and model of your lens. The Auto Color Aberration tool is enabled by default; I never turn it off.
Other RAW converters offer CA removal, but it is usually a manual process involving two different sliders. I find the NX method to be much simpler. Left: Image processed without Auto CA removal. Right: Image processed with Auto CA removal enabled. I find this tool to be hit or miss. But here it is, in case you want to try it out. Light fall-off occurs when the image circle from your lens is not uniformly bright across the frame.
Usually this happens when using Corner shading fast lenses wide-open. The Vignette Control slider can reduce the effect of light fall-off; some cameras, like the Nikon D3, have an in-camera vignette control option, which enables this control automatically in Capture Before vignette NX2. Moving the slider to the right positive values brightens the corners of the image. Moving the slider to the left darkens the corners of the image.
While de- fishing is no substitute for a rectilinear wide-angle lens, it can work in a pinch. Because global adjustments are the foundation for the local adjustments applied later in the editing workflow, it is critical that they be done early on in post processing.
Fundamentally, the Develop Section is not a place where you need to spend a lot of time; but it is a section that you should be thinking about first before you move on to making other adjustments in Capture NX2. Often times, the Picture Control presets get you where you want to be without further adjustments. The best part about the Develop Section in Capture NX2 is that it effectively takes over the majority of global adjustments to light and color that would otherwise have been made in separate Edit Steps in Capture NX 1.
Because the Develop Section is fairly easy to access, it offers a quick solution for getting your images prepared for further processing assuming they even need it. In the Adjust Section, you can apply many different kinds of effects to your image. Moreover, applying an Edit Step locally does not require complex masking routines, which makes using them easy. Edit Steps are not adjustment tools in the traditional sense.
Instead, they operate as containers that hold adjustments that you place in them. Edit Steps are saved to your NEF as instruction sets, and can be deleted from the Edit List at any time, making them a non-destructive form of editing.
The simple answer is that the only pre-defined editing palettes in Capture NX2 are the tools in the Develop Section. For those of you who are familiar with Adobe Photoshop, Edit Steps are conceptually similar to adjustment layers– the steps themselves are just placeholders until you define what adjustment you want to put into them. Notice the yellow border around the Edit Step– this indicates that it is actively selected. Any adjustment placed in an Edit Step can have opacity and blending effects applied to it.
The yellow box around the Edit Step should disappear. Right: Closing the Edit Step and deselecting it shows that it is no longer highlighted in the list. Note: The Develop Section also utilizes the Reset icon. A useful feature to keep in mind when you are applying effects in Edit Steps is the Opacity and Blending settings. The blending modes change the way the effect appears in the image: Normal: Effect is applied to all channels at full- strength.
This is the default blending mode. Lighten: Applies the effect to areas of the image where the result is brighter than the original image Screen: increases the pixel values of the resulting Us the Blending Mode menu to choose one of six blending modes.
Tonal values above neutral are lightened, tonal values below are darkened. Tonal values of exactly are left alone. Multiply: subtracts the tonal value of the effect to create a darkened final image Darken: the effect is only applied in areas where the With RGB mode, you can selectively apply the effects to any result darkens the image. Other opacity options You can choose to apply the Opacity effect in all channels default , or in individual color channels RGB , or you can apply the effect in the luminosity brightness and chrominance color channels.
All told, the opacity and blending modes offer a significant amount of flexibility for applying effects in Edit Steps. However, there are a few instances where you might want to take advantage of some of the other tools for adjusting global brightness, contrast, and color balance.
Again, it all depends on the feeling you are trying to convey with your image. Central to getting image contrast set correctly is the concept of defining the black and white points in your image. The image will turn gray. The double threshold tool allows you to see anywhere in your image that has a tonal value of 0 black or white.
Everything in between those values is rendered gray. Black threshold slider White threshold slider White areas are the lightest points in your image. Black areas are the darkest points in your image. An easy way of setting the black point on your image is to use a Black Control Point. The Black Control Point allows you to set the darkest pixel value in your image, but it also gives you control over luminosity brightness. The Black Control Point will also remove color casts from shadow areas.
This is especially useful for portraits. The Black Control Point will be visible in the image. White Control Points not only establish the lightest point in your image, but they also remove unwanted color casts. What about the Neutral Control Point? It can be useful in JPEGs if you have a neutral gray object in the frame. That means that color shifts can occur Midtone slider when using this tool, making it useful for White threshold slider correcting color casts.
The histogram will show only the data from the selected color channel. An anchor point will be placed on the curve. The Anchor Point Tool lets you click on your image to place a point on the curve that corresponds to the selected tonal value. You can also use this technique with the LCH editor if you want to only affect luminosity brightness data and protect the color data.
Notice how the curves changed for each of the three color channels. Left: Contrast and color balance were adjusted with Auto Contrast. Right: Contrast was adjusted but color balance was left unchanged. Fortunately, you can use the Auto Levels tool to apply automatic levels and color balance correction to each image in a batch job. Slide the sliders to the left to reduce the effect; slide the slider to the right to increase the effect.
Top: Default settings. Bottom: Custom settings. Use it to control luminance and color. Simply put, this adjustment tool allows you to control Brightness and Contrast lightness , Saturation chroma , and Hue– all in one step. A unique aspect of the LCH editor is that it separates out luminance brightness information from chrominance color information. All the same icons are there– including the Levels sliders reset icons and the Auto Contrast icon. The LCH window changes from the image histogram to something more akin to a color spectrum.
Want to darken a blue sky? Click the line where the blues are and drag the point downward. Want lighter reds? Click the line in the red part of the spectrum to add an anchor point and drag it upward. The resulting curve shows you which colors are affected by your adjustment. In the example above, yellows and your image and modify light greens are made lighter by dragging an anchor point upward on the curve.
I probably use this option the most to make saturation adjustments to Anchor Point Tool specific color ranges. In fact, you use this Master chroma editor in exactly the adjustment same way as the color lightness editor, but now you also have the option to increase or decrease saturation of any point on the entire color spectrum. In this example, 4 Use Anchor Point greens are boosted and blues are desaturated. The LCH editor can help solve this problem by protecting skin tones from becoming oversaturated.
Anchor Point tool But, if you want to make selective adjustments to the hue in your image, this is the place to do it. As with the Master Hue adjustment chroma editor, you can make overall hue changes or limit Hue Map them to certain colors. Rotation tool Moving the curve maps a color from the baseline value to the new point on the spectrum.
Essentially obsolete with the advent of Highlight and Shadow Protection Sliders in Quick Fix, but can be applied in an Edit Step if desired, or if local application is needed. Color Balance Basic controls for adjusting brightness, contrast, and color in an Edit Step. Most often used during soft-proofing to make global changes to color balance.
Color Booster Allows you to increase saturation globally in a way that is not overpowering. For example, how many times have you struggled to make an adjustment because correcting one part of your image ended up making other parts of your image look worse?
Local adjustments are effects applied to certain parts of your image while leaving other parts alone. Both methods are valuable and have their own specific strengths and weaknesses.
By creating selections in Edit Steps, it means you can transform every effect in Capture NX2 from a global one to a local one. The ramifications of this transformation are huge. Need to brighten a face? Use a local adjustment. Capture NX2 selection tools make it possible to create special effects or simply make improvements to your image that you might otherwise have to do in another application. By staying in Capture NX2, you can, in many cases, keep your image in the NEF format from camera to print and save time otherwise spent switching between editing applications.
Note the opacity slider underneath the toolbar. You should see the entire image turn green. Using the fill tool selects the entire image; the green color is the mask view 5 Select the Remove Tool showing the selected area. The green fill is removed. The Marquee and Lasso tools in Capture NX2 work a little differently than those you might be familiar with. These tools alone do not define a selection, per se.
Use the lasso to make free-form selections; the various Marquee tools are used to create defined shapes. Creating a Selection with the Lasso or Marquee. The selected area will be filled in green, showing that it is now an actively selected area. The fill is applied outside your selected area. The green mask is removed from the area defined by the lasso. You can modify lasso selections by holding down the shift key add or option while using the lasso tool.
This represents the area affected by the selection. When you choose an adjustment to place in the Edit Step, the mask view will disappear. There are three ways to view Edit Steps that have selections applied to them: Hide Selection: Selection mask is not shown, showing you the image as it would appear normally with the effect applied.
Tip: You can toggle the different views by right-clicking the mouse in the image Clockwise from top right: Hide Selection view, Show Overlay, Show Mask. Edit window and choosing the view you want to use. Selection created with the lasso tool only. Selection created with the lasso tool bright green and Base Mask applied. One of the most straightforward selection tools is the Selection Brush.
Use these options to set the brush size, softness, and opacity. The effect of Brush Hardness is illustrated in this selection view. Tip: Keyboard Shortcuts There are numerous keyboard shortcuts in Capture NX2, but the Selection Brush tool is a good example of where they come in handy.
The gradient tools define selections on their own. New in Capture NX2 is a radial circular gradient tool to go along with the linear gradient tool. The gradient tool helps blend your effect so that it appears natural. Slide the transition point to define the length of the transition zone. The Show Mask view inset shows the selected area in white. Note that the effect is not applied in a hard circle!
Left: Image showing the effect of a minus Selection Control Point. For example, you might want to apply a selection to a large expanse of sky. To match settings between Selection Control Points, use the Duplicate command.
With a two-button mouse, you can use the contextual menu by right-clicking on the Control Point. Drag the new Control Point to where you want to place it in the image right. Show Mask view shows the effect of the two Selection Control Points; the selected area is in white. This is how the tools interact with each other. The Base Mask cannot be applied until a selection tool is added to the Edit Step.
Base Mask has Selection Control Point added. Base Mask added– overridden by Selection Control Point. You can link multiple adjustments into a single Edit Step. This technique is very handy with local adjustments if you want to apply more than one effect to the same selection area.
A common trick in the field to even out high-contrast scenes was to use a graduated neutral-density filter. The overlay view will disappear. In this image, the sky and mountains can be darkened.
This setting will help prevent your USM step from re-sharpening all the noise you just tried to remove! Intensity is on the left side of the table, and sharpness 5 settings are listed at the top. The intensity slider functions to blur image data, especially in the chrominance color channels, which helps to 10 remove the appearance of noise.
The sharpness slider reduces the blur from the intensity slider, but it does so primarily from the luminosity channel. The trade off of most NR tools is that it is easy to remove color chrominance noise 25 without harming image sharpness; if there is luminance noise grain , removing it destroys detail significantly.
Usually, there are areas in images that have detail we wish to preserve, and other areas which are out of focus or where sharpness is not critical, like skies.
Make sure sharpening is turned off and that you have not performed any sharpening on the image. Adjust the intensity slider so that the color noise is removed. The image will look smeared. Optional: Selection Control Points are very useful for adding NR to skies at a strong level Use the Opacity Mixer to reduce Luminance opacity until the while leaving the rest of image has detail again.
Note the chrominance and luminance noise. Sharpening will tend to counteract this blur. You may want to reduce the radius slightly if you get major halos in the image.
Adding noise reduction is always at the expense of some image detail, so use it sparingly. Nikon D2Xs, For more on versions, refer to page Typically, that means making a print, but sometimes it means making a small JPEG for the web, or an image that I can send to friends or clients via email. How you optimize your image for its final output depends on the size and quality of the image, as well as its final destination.
Most often, I resize my images for printing them without cropping them first. That is, I keep the image in its native aspect ratio and either make the image smaller or larger, depending on the print size. There are two methods for resizing images: resizing while resampling and resizing without resampling.
Resampling allows you to set the image resolution by interpolation while also scaling the image. When you use resampling, the dimensions of the image, in pixels, changes and the file size will increase or decrease. Resizing without resampling will keep the pixel dimensions and file size constant; resolution will change depending on the size you make the image. The method that you choose will depend on the final output size and destination of your image.
The other side of the image will be adjusted proportionally. Resizing without resampling will change the image resolution but keep the file size in pixels the same as the original.
Resizing with Resampling will allow the File Size to grow or shrink, depending on the image size. Note that the original The most common use of the Crop Tool is to produce an image that has a particular aspect ratio. Common picture frames, however, come in the aspect ratio 8×10, 16x Set the aspect ratio to 8x Use portrait orientation for vertical shots; landscape orientation for horizontals.
The other field will scale to 8 inches. This is why you need to combine a crop with a resize step in Capture NX2. Before you try this technique, it is critical that you have a calibrated monitor and you have installed the paper color profiles for your printer.
The toughest part about soft-proofing is remembering out what the original image looked like. This technique is a great way to ensure the best possible soft-proofs. This creates a copy of your image. At least I can be ready for that when I go to print the from the Target Profile image! Choose either relative colorimetric or perceptual rendering whichever you think looks best. Make sure black- point compensation is enabled. Understand that in some cases, a perfect match may not be possible due to the gamut color space of your printer.
To overcome the sharpness loss when printing, I recommend another round of sharpening, often referred to as Output Sharpening. As a general rule, an image properly sharpened for print will appear to be over-sharpened on the screen. This will add a High Pass filter into the open Edit Step. When you are saving an image for the Web or email, you need to make it smaller and convert it to the sRGB color space.
This procedure will do just that. Use relative colorimetric intent and black point compensation checked. The print dialog will open. Otherwise, Capture NX2 will try to scale the image to fit the paper. This will allow Capture NX2 to control the color settings. Higher quality settings result in a larger file size.
In the JPEG save options dialog, you can set the compression amount to vary file size. You can change this directory in the Capture NX2 preferences. Use the Open With Certainly, Capture NX2 puts a tremendous number of tools at your disposal. The other way to speed up image processing in Capture NX2 is to take advantage of its automated presets.
Other images require special handling, but the majority of my editing steps happen in mere seconds. In just one or two clicks of my mouse, I can apply Edit Steps that contain my most commonly used adjustments. The Save Settings dialog box will open.
I save my settings to the default location. Check the box next to the step you want to save. Make sure all the other steps are unchecked. This is useful for making changes to Picture Control Settings without having to expand the Develop Section. Make sure this is the only option selected, unless you want to save other parameters. You can access all your saved settings from the Batch Icon in the Edit List. All you need to do then is make the adjustments to the Edit Steps as you see fit.
The Settings preferences dialog will open. Note: If you move the location of a Settings File, it will no longer appear in the list.
This will permanently delete the file from your computer, so use this option with care! By using the versions tool, you can store multiple instruction sets for each NEF. For example, you can save different crops, different image sizes, or different processing effects into a single NEF. Look for blue text to link you back to pages in Section I where you can refresh the use of a particular tool or technique. Portraits usually require soft lighting and low contrast.
Colors should be slightly muted in formal portraits. These settings accomplish that. Control Points will let you easily add fill lighting effects. After 7 Drag the point created on the chroma curve downward, and the widen it with the width slider. This links a second blur step along with the first one. The skin softener effect works by linking two different Gaussian Blur effects into the same Edit Step.
Note: Perform this step after Capture Sharpening. Move up 4 Click two points on the Master Lightness Curve as shown in the illustration. Then keep moving the slider to the right about 5 more units. Boost the saturation of reds and greens in the Chroma channel editor.
Widen them with the width slider. Move the master chroma slider up to an output level of 5. If the image appears over- sharpened, reduce the Amount slider. To selectively remove haze from a scene, you can use a Color Control Point. Use duplicate Control Points to fill in other areas as needed. This is a very subtle effect, but it can add some clarity to images that have large, distant objects in them.
This is the basic formula for adjusting images of wildlife. I treat wildlife images as sort of a hybrid between landscapes and portraits. I usually want my wildlife shots to have rich colors, but I also need to retain detail in fur and feathers. This is the basic routine I use for processing wildlife images. The Black and White Conversion filter allows you to change your color images into powerful black and white images.
Leave the black luminance at 0 and the white luminance at Apply Capture Sharpening. Add duplicate Control Points as needed to cover the sky and trees. If you have an older Nikon DSLR lying around, you might want to consider having it modified to shoot infrared images. A recommended place to get your camera converted to infrared is Life Pixel; www.
Double Threshold This will enhance colors in the infrared image. Tool to set Black and White Control Points. This step is entirely subjective. Then place a Neutral Control point anywhere on the image where you get nice midtones. Of all the topics in digital photography, workflow is probably the most confusing and contentious. Why is digital workflow such a challenging subject? There are different kinds of photographers out there, from the fine-art photographers who process a select few images to the high-volume, deadline-bound wedding photographers and photojournalists.
The tools suited for one style of photography may be insufficient or total overkill for other styles of photography.
Workflow is also very tightly tied into the kind of camera and computing equipment a photographer chooses to use. Computer hardware creates limitations on workflow, too. My goal in this section is to share the way I do my own workflow, and give some ideas on how you can set up your own. This allows me to set up some basic requirements that help me evaluate whether a software application will be useful in my workflow.
The whole idea of having a workflow is to not only have a reliable process for managing your digital images, but also to minimize the amount of work needed to do the management. This is what your camera and camera settings is for.
Here is where you transfer images to your computer, set up file storage strategies, and evaluate images to decide what is worth processing and what is trash. Up until now, this book has essentially dealt with 3, the Processing Phase.
As a NEF shooter and Capture NX2 user, however, there are some important considerations to make when choosing a workflow application. First, you need to determine how the workflow application display RAW images. The apparent strength of many applications that offer RAW support is also their biggest weakness when it comes to NEFs.
In Image Browsers compared. Adobe Bridge bottom re-renders RAW files with its own engine. Second, you need to know how your workflow application handles metadata. Unfortunately, Capture NX2 does not read sidecar files. Third, determine how your application handles opening files in external editors. While some people simply copy their image files from the card to their computer manually, I like the flexibility of using a transfer application.
Nikon Transfer left is a free download from Nikon. Both programs offer a variety of operations that can be performed while you transfer images. I prefer to take a functional approach to file storage structure. Others may take a different viewpoint, but I try to create a master directory for my images that gives me a clue as to what images are inside it.
Am I wrong? Are they? Workflow is personal. Before you run out and buy three extra hard drives, at least consider making a duplicate of all your NEFs. The easiest way to make a back-up copy of your files is while you are transferring them into your computer.
Both Nikon Transfer and Photo Mechanic offer the ability to copy images from a camera to two destinations simultaneously. For added insurance, I set my secondary destination to a second hard disk drive. Adding metadata during image transfer One of the nice features of digital images is their ability to store metadata in addition to the image data.
Some metadata, like EXIF information shooting data is already in your image file. However, adding keywords and other relevant metadata tags to your images will help you manage those images later, even help you find them on your computer.
While this process will slow down image transfers slightly, it speeds up my overall workflow. While there is nothing inherently wrong with the default naming system, it has some limitations. First of all, the default file names give you no relevant information about the file. Secondly, the Nikon file naming system will reset itself after 10, shots.
That means, in time, you can get two images with identical names! This nomenclature system is useful, because all my images are tagged with my name, the shot date, and the frame number. Again, I do my image renaming during the image transfer process with Photo Mechanic, but I could also perform a batch rename in my image browser. The file naming dialog in Nikon Transfer right allows you to rename files during transfer.
Rating Images: Stars and Labels You can use star ratings, labels, or both to annotate your images. I try to keep my rating system simple. Using an iterative process reduces the number of shots that I actually will process to a reasonable value.
Of images, I might only have three or four that are worthy of a 5-star rating. Alternatively, you can use the color label feature to rank your images. I prefer to combine color labels with star ratings. For example, I might have a folder of images from a wildlife shoot. My keywording strategy, however, is to work from generic to specific.
Many browsers will let you apply keywords to multiple images at once. At some point, I get to where I may need to keyword images individually, but I try to batch process as many images as I can. Other Metadata Depending on your needs, you can also add a variety of metadata tags to your images beyond keywords.
You can add captions, contact information, categories, and more. There are two ways to approach the editing phase: using the Capture NX2 browser or opening files directly from an external browser.
If you wish to use the Capture NX2 browser to open your images, then it is important that you can view any star ratings and labels you may have applied. You can then open a folder in the Capture NX2 browser and filter your images on star ratings or labels. Alternatively, you can choose to send images from your browser directly to Capture NX2, bypassing the Capture NX2 browser entirely.
However, that does not mean you cannot achieve an effective digital workflow with other products. Image catalogs and databases: Do you need one?
A lot has been made lately of having a powerful database for cataloging your image files. I agree, an image database is a strong tool that can help manage your files across multiple disk drives and even deal with offline storage. But do you need it? The strength of an image database lies in its ability to allow you to search through thousands of images and find the few that you need.
For a stock image shooter, this can make the difference between making a sale or coming up empty. Image databases catalogs allow you to search on keywords and other image metadata to find relevant images quickly. Another option to consider is the file search mechanism in your computer. The Macintosh version of Photo Mechanic can leverage the Spotlight search to find images from multiple folders across multiple hard drives and display them in a single browser window.
This makes the need for a catalog somewhat less pressing. Catalog programs can also alert you to when a file has been moved from its default location, which can indicate that you need to restore a directory from its back-up assuming you backed up your files. The same rules about built-in RAW converters that applied to browsers also apply to image catalog software. I recommend trying them out View NX is free and Photo Mechanic can be downloaded on a trial basis before committing to either one.

Select this tool when viewing an image that does not fit in the image window. Click and drag to reposition the contents of the window. Double-click this tool to fit the current image to the editor so that the entire image fits into the space available.
Page 94 To straighten your image using the straighten tool, follow these steps: With an image open within the editor, click the straighten tool in the toolbar. Locate a line within the image that should be either vertical or horizontal and click on the start of the line. Page Crop Tool If you are satisfied with the straightening effect, continue editing your image using the other tools available within Capture NX 2 or perform a save.
The straightening effect is now applied to your image. To cancel the straightening effect, click on the Delete button found at the bottom of the Straighten step within the Edit List palette or click on the Straighten step and press the delete key on your Page Crop Method Double-click within the crop or press the enter key to apply the crop.
This will cause the image information outside of the crop to be hidden and a new Crop step to be added to the Edit List palette. If the image is saved in the NEF format, you will be able to remove the Crop step to display the hidden information again. Page Black Control Point Black Control Point The black control point enables you to place a control point directly on your image, and to cause that targeted color to not only become black, but also to neutralize the dark tones of your image.
Black control points are normally set on what should be the darkest point of the image and are used to set one end of the dynamic range of the image. The values set for the selected black control point are displayed enabling you to enter a new value directly to adjust the effect of the control point. Page Neutral Control Point Neutral Control Point Neutral control points enable you to correct a color cast in your photograph by forcing the targeted color to become neutral.
In its default operation, the neutral control point will change the color values in the targeted color so that the red, green, and blue values for that color are equal. Equalizing the red, green, and blue values for a specific color causes that color becomes neutral, or without a specific color or hue. Page To add a neutral control point to your image, follow these steps: Click on the neutral control point icon in the toolbar.
The cursor will change to a crosshair. Identify an object that should be neutral and click on that object to place a neutral control point. Page Neutral Control Point Method Neutral Control Point Method Use the neutral control point method pull-down menu to switch between controlling only the color balance of the Neutral Control Point or affecting the luminosity, or brightness, as well. RGB Method The RGB method of the neutral control point affects only the color balance within the image while maintaining the same brightness.
The values set for the selected neutral control point are displayed enabling you to enter a new value directly to adjust the effect of the control point.
Click on the Reset button to reset the selected color control point to the default values. Page White Control Point Method To add a white control point to your image, follow these steps: Click on the white control point icon in the toolbar. Identify the object you would like to be the lightest object in the image and click on that object to place a white control point. Page Advanced RGB Method The RGB method of the white control point enables you to set the individual red, green, and blue values of the lightest color in the image.
This option is helpful if your printer requires a non-neutral white. Within this mode, you are presented with individual red, green, and blue sliders on the white control point and red, green, and blue entries within the white control point sub-step of the Edit List palette.
Page Each color control point that is placed on an object in your image identifies the characteristics of the color as well as the level of detail of that object, enabling you to make adjustments to the color of that object. With the use of the size slider, you are able to increase the reach or scale of the current color control point so that it affects similar colors of the objects which are farther away from the color control point.
Page Color Control Point Mode Adjust the remaining sliders connected to the color control point to adjust the color and light of the selected object. Additional color control points can be added to the image by repeating the steps listed above. To delete a color control point, click on the color control point in the image or in the Edit List palette and press the delete key on the keyboard.
Page Show Selection Show Selection The Show Selection checkbox enables you to see where the current color control point is affecting the image. Areas inked in white are being affected by the color control point, while areas inked in black are not being affected by the color control point. You can quickly access the Show Selection option by right- clicking Windows or control-clicking Macintosh on the color control point and selecting Show Selection.
Page Red-Eye Control Point Advanced The Advanced method provides superior results when lightening shadows or working with images with a high level of noise or grain. The values set for the selected color control point are displayed enabling you to enter a new value directly to adjust the effect of the control point. Page Auto Retouch Brush Auto Retouch Brush The auto retouch brush enables you to automatically repair unwanted details found within the image.
Use this tool to remove dust spots, blemishes, or distracting objects, with a unique blending algorithm that matches the surrounding structure, color, and tonality. To use the auto retouch brush, follow these steps: Click on the auto retouch brush icon in the toolbar. Page Size The auto retouch brush provides you with the following controls: Size Changing the Size option increases or decreases the size of the brush.
You can use a selection control point to selectively apply any enhancement found in either the Adjust or Filter menus. To use a selection control point, follow these steps: Add an enhancement to the image from the Adjust or Filter menus.
Page Lasso And Marquee Tools Lasso and Marquee Tools The lasso and marquee tools enable you to create a selection on your images that will limit where an enhancement affects your image. Page Edge Softness Click and draw a selection around the objects that you want to affect in the active image window.
To subtract from the selection, select the — icon and draw within the selection. Page Selection Brush Tool Selection Brush Tool The selection brush enables you to selectively paint in or paint out the enhancements found in the current step.
You can use the selection brush to selectively apply any enhancement found within the Adjust or Filter menus, as well as the color, black, neutral, and white control points. Page Opacity Opacity Changing the Opacity option increases or decreases the opacity of the brush strokes that are applied. You can use the selection gradient tools to selectively apply any enhancement found within the Adjust or Filter menus, as well as the color, black, neutral, and white control points.
Page Gradient Range Click and draw a line within the active image window. When zoomed-in, the areas visible within the active image window are shown as a rectangle superimposed on top of the entire image. The Edit List palette was greatly improved, with the position of many tools and features moved to provide better access.
The Edit List palette can be used as a history that allows you to go back and modify any of the adjustments that you have previously made to your images. Click on the triangle to toggle between showing and hiding the Triangles contents of the associated section or enhancement. Apply checkboxes are used to turn enhancements on or off.
Adjustments to an w Apply Checkbox enhancement automatically enable the corresponding Apply checkbox; Page Version Version The Version menu can now be found at the top of the Edit List palette, providing you with direct control of this powerful feature. Versions represent an advanced way of working with and maintaining a number of different versions of the same image within one image file.
If this folder or the image adjustment file is deleted, changes will be lost. Once the. You can also save images as JPG files. Floating palettes can be arranged in a workspace that best supports your workflow style and needs—even positioned on a second monitor—and you can choose from seven different display styles.
Images can be viewed as thumbnails, double clicked as full image previews, or with the current image preview and thumbnails combined. You can also view images in a side-by-side comparison if you want to see before and after views, and compare various images in 2-up and 4-up layouts. Features of Capture NX-D include batch processing, levels and curves adjustments, adjustments to Nikon Picture Controls including the latest Picture Control styles as well as with RAW files from older cameras, white balance, noise reduction, unsharp mask and camera and lens corrections.
Other features of Picture Control Utility 2 include finer adjustments of each parameter, expandable window size, flexible size of the preview screen, larger display for easy setting of fine-tuning and more. In this example, 4 Use Anchor Point greens are boosted and blues are desaturated. The LCH editor can help solve this problem by protecting skin tones from becoming oversaturated.
Anchor Point tool But, if you want to make selective adjustments to the hue in your image, this is the place to do it. As with the Master Hue adjustment chroma editor, you can make overall hue changes or limit Hue Map them to certain colors.
Rotation tool Moving the curve maps a color from the baseline value to the new point on the spectrum. Essentially obsolete with the advent of Highlight and Shadow Protection Sliders in Quick Fix, but can be applied in an Edit Step if desired, or if local application is needed. Color Balance Basic controls for adjusting brightness, contrast, and color in an Edit Step. Most often used during soft-proofing to make global changes to color balance.
Color Booster Allows you to increase saturation globally in a way that is not overpowering. For example, how many times have you struggled to make an adjustment because correcting one part of your image ended up making other parts of your image look worse?
Local adjustments are effects applied to certain parts of your image while leaving other parts alone. Both methods are valuable and have their own specific strengths and weaknesses. By creating selections in Edit Steps, it means you can transform every effect in Capture NX2 from a global one to a local one. The ramifications of this transformation are huge. Need to brighten a face? Use a local adjustment. Capture NX2 selection tools make it possible to create special effects or simply make improvements to your image that you might otherwise have to do in another application.
By staying in Capture NX2, you can, in many cases, keep your image in the NEF format from camera to print and save time otherwise spent switching between editing applications. Note the opacity slider underneath the toolbar. You should see the entire image turn green. Using the fill tool selects the entire image; the green color is the mask view 5 Select the Remove Tool showing the selected area.
The green fill is removed. The Marquee and Lasso tools in Capture NX2 work a little differently than those you might be familiar with. These tools alone do not define a selection, per se. Use the lasso to make free-form selections; the various Marquee tools are used to create defined shapes.
Creating a Selection with the Lasso or Marquee. The selected area will be filled in green, showing that it is now an actively selected area.
The fill is applied outside your selected area. The green mask is removed from the area defined by the lasso. You can modify lasso selections by holding down the shift key add or option while using the lasso tool. This represents the area affected by the selection. When you choose an adjustment to place in the Edit Step, the mask view will disappear.
There are three ways to view Edit Steps that have selections applied to them: Hide Selection: Selection mask is not shown, showing you the image as it would appear normally with the effect applied. Tip: You can toggle the different views by right-clicking the mouse in the image Clockwise from top right: Hide Selection view, Show Overlay, Show Mask. Edit window and choosing the view you want to use.
Selection created with the lasso tool only. Selection created with the lasso tool bright green and Base Mask applied. One of the most straightforward selection tools is the Selection Brush. Use these options to set the brush size, softness, and opacity. The effect of Brush Hardness is illustrated in this selection view. Tip: Keyboard Shortcuts There are numerous keyboard shortcuts in Capture NX2, but the Selection Brush tool is a good example of where they come in handy.
The gradient tools define selections on their own. New in Capture NX2 is a radial circular gradient tool to go along with the linear gradient tool. The gradient tool helps blend your effect so that it appears natural. Slide the transition point to define the length of the transition zone.
The Show Mask view inset shows the selected area in white. Note that the effect is not applied in a hard circle! Left: Image showing the effect of a minus Selection Control Point. For example, you might want to apply a selection to a large expanse of sky. To match settings between Selection Control Points, use the Duplicate command.
With a two-button mouse, you can use the contextual menu by right-clicking on the Control Point. Drag the new Control Point to where you want to place it in the image right. Show Mask view shows the effect of the two Selection Control Points; the selected area is in white. This is how the tools interact with each other.
The Base Mask cannot be applied until a selection tool is added to the Edit Step. Base Mask has Selection Control Point added. Base Mask added– overridden by Selection Control Point. You can link multiple adjustments into a single Edit Step. This technique is very handy with local adjustments if you want to apply more than one effect to the same selection area. A common trick in the field to even out high-contrast scenes was to use a graduated neutral-density filter. The overlay view will disappear.
In this image, the sky and mountains can be darkened. After you created the Dodge and Burn tools on the previous page, you might want to use the same effect on other images. Rather than manually adjusting the Edit Steps each time, it is a tremendous time saver to create a Settings File of your Edit Step s and apply it using the Batch tool. This is the only step you want to save. When you are finished, the new setting will be stored in the batch settings list under the Batch icon. Make sure that only item checked in the Save Adjustments dialog is the setting you want to save.
The Control Point approach to making selections is fast and intuitive. Creating a selection that would normally require several minutes or more of mask work in Photoshop can be done with a single mouse click in Capture NX2 using a Control Point. Color Control Points and Selection Control Points both use the same technology, and so both create selections in the same way.
The difference between these two tools is that while Selection Control Points simply define a selection in an Edit Step, Color Control Points have a suite of tools built into them for adjusting local color, brightness, and contrast. A simple rule is that if you are making adjustments to light and color that require a complex selection, Color Control Points should be your first choice.
One last thing about Control Points: not every image needs them, and those that do often only need a small number of Control Points. It can be very tempting to start adding Control Points in all your images. Remember, sometimes less is more. Each slider controls a different adjustment parameter.
The most commonly used controls are the Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation sliders, which are visible by default. Selected areas are shown in white.
The main slider attached to a Control Point adjusts the size of the effect. The size slider determines the relative distance from the control point that the effect is spread over.
This will give you a feel for how the tool is making selections. Put the control point on a diverse area of the image, and the selection changes dramatically. Notice how the moon top was not selected, as it did not match the pixel information in the sky.
You can add more than one Color Control Point to your image, but it is important to know how multiple Control Points interact. When you place two Control Points in the same Edit Step, they will act to cancel each other out in areas of overlap. This property of Control Points is actually quite useful. Notice that the face turns black. If you want to create additive effects with multiple Color Control Points where effects are not cancelled out , then use separate Edit Steps A second Color Control Point placed on the face chooses the skin tones, and for your Control Points.
Then the effects will overlap. Control Point behaves as though all its sliders are set to zero. While you cannot add to the area selected by a Color Control point, you can use the minus brush to remove the effect from parts of your image.
These are the protected areas that the Color Control Point can no longer affect. Rather than adding another Color Control Point and trying to manually adjust each slider to match the settings of the original point, you can use the Duplicate command to make exact copies of your Control Points.
Place a Color Control Point on your image and adjust the sliders to your liking. As an alternative, you can right- click on the Control Point and choose the Duplicate command from the contextual menus. Move the duplicate point to where you want to place it in the image bottom. Color Control Points are my go-to tool to recover shadow detail in photos taken of people wearing baseball caps where the face is in the shadows. The best part about using a Control Point for this effect is that it looks totally natural when applied correctly– and it is ridiculously easy to apply it correctly.
The unfilled circle on the triangle represents the current color of your control point. Turn the wheel to adjust hue, or place the dot wherever you want in the triangle. You can use the eyedropper icon to pick out a color point from anywhere on your image. Click the eyedropper icon and then click an area on your image that has the color you desire. It is very easy to get unnatural looking results. Click and drag the edge of the color The eyedropper icon lets you pick a wheel to change hue.
Opening the Swatches Panel gives you access to commonly used colors. No longer do you need to use a separate pixel editor program to edit your image simply because of a dust spot. The Red Eye Control Point is used to remove the red-eye effect sometimes seen in indoor flash photos. Of course, not all my images will need these tools, but it is nice to know that they are there when the situation presents itself. It makes removing dust spots absolutely painless.
Auto Retouch Brush in 1 Open the image action Notice the dust spots in this image. Adjust the size of the Auto Retouch Brush using either the size slider that appears beneath the toolbar, or by After Auto Retouch Brush using the keyboard shortcuts [ or ]. Repeat for additional dust spots, offending seagulls, or anything else that is small and distracting.
Tip: Keep your sensor clean One way to get rid of dust spots is to have a clean sensor. I recommend the Copper Hill method. Before We all have shots where our subject looks like the devil with red eyes. Use them in the situations where they are warranted. Obviously, if your horizon is level in the image then using the straighten tool makes little sense.
Use the Straighten tool to correct tilted images. Drag the Straighten Tool across the horizon line or other reference point. Some lenses, especially super-zoom lenses and wide-angle lenses, will produce images with slight distortions. You can use the Distortion Control Tool in Capture NX2 to correct distortions in your images caused by lens aberrations.
Note that white areas appear around the image. You can change the fill color using the Fill color tool in the Edit Step. Drag the slider to the right to correct barrel distortion. One way to use the Crop Tool is to help improve your compositions.
Remember, the Crop Tool does not resize your image. Use constrained cropping to maintain a particular aspect ratio for your image. Use the in your image. This of course allows you to apply Filter Effects globally or locally. This filter will darken the complementary color to the color you choose. For example, a yellow filter will darken blues in your image and lighten yellows. This is a filter that I use very little, if at all. Colorize Use the colorize filter to overlay colors onto the image.
Use the color selector or eyedropper tool from the Colorize tool to choose the desired color. Black and White Conversion Use this filter to convert color images to black and white. The filter option works in the same way as the filters in the monochrome settings in Picture Control. These filters will show up in the Filter Menu, and are also applied in Edit Steps. The filter options you see will depend on the version of Color Efex you have installed. By now, you have probably noticed that when you disable in-camera sharpening in Picture Control, your image looks quite soft.
In Capture Sharpening, you need to consider our camera. Second, you must also consider our subject matter. Output Sharpening happens as the very last step in the output stage of your workflow and takes into consideration the size and destination of your image. A small image destined for the web will be sharpened much differently than a 16×20 inkjet print.
Capture and Output Sharpening are applied as global adjustments. In between the two sharpening steps, it is an option to perform some selective sharpening or blurring of our image to get a desired effect.
Noise Removal Depending on your camera and how you use it, noise may or may not be an issue. Every camera manufacturer has its own approach to noise removal, but one thing is constant; removing noise can cause a loss of fine detail in images.
Your sharpening settings will be impacted by any noise removal settings you use, because these two processes are effectively working against each other. Therefore, it is important to be able to adjust sharpening settings in the context of noise removal. In my opinion, leaving noise removal up to the photographer is a good thing. If you plan on using any of these programs some of which are quite good , do not sharpen your image at all, and do all your noise reduction and final output sharpening in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
First, it provides excellent control over image sharpness. Second, Capture NX2 automatically applies USM only to the luminosity channel of your image, reducing the appearance of color shifts and other artifacts. The third, and possibly nicest feature of sharpening in Capture NX2 is the fact that sharpening becomes a non-destructive process.
While there are ways to sharpen non-destructively in Photoshop, those techniques are far more complicated and require bitmap layers that can easily double the image file size.
Think of it as a master volume control for USM. Radius: This slider changes the distance over which the USM effect is applied. A small radius sharpens fine detail, a large radius sharpens overall shape. Threshold: The threshold slider adjusts the sensitivity of the USM tool to differences in tone values between adjacent pixels. The value you enter is the number of tonal steps that any two adjacent pixels must differ by in order to be affected by the tool. A threshold of 0 would sharpen just about anything in the image; a threshold of would sharpen almost nothing.

Page Each color control point that is placed on an object in your image identifies the characteristics of the color as well as the level of detail of that object, enabling you to make adjustments to the color of that object.
With the use of the size slider, you are able to increase the reach or scale of the current color control point so that it affects similar colors of the objects which are farther away from the color control point. Additional color control points can be added to the image by repeating the steps listed above. Easy-to-use display formats Capture NX-D supports a variety of displays for the efficient processing of images. White Control Points not only establish the lightest point in your image, but they also remove unwanted color casts. What about the Neutral Control Point? It can be useful in JPEGs if you have a neutral gray object in the frame.
That means that color shifts can occur Midtone slider when using this tool, making it useful for White threshold slider correcting color casts. The histogram will show only the data from the selected color channel. An anchor point will be placed on the curve. The Anchor Point Tool lets you click on your image to place a point on the curve that corresponds to the selected tonal value. Fortunately, you can use the Auto Levels tool to apply automatic levels and color balance correction to each image in a batch job. Simply put, this adjustment tool allows you to control Brightness and Contrast lightness , Saturation chroma , and Hue– all in one step. A unique aspect of the LCH editor is that it separates out luminance brightness information from chrominance color information.
All the same icons are there– including the Levels sliders reset icons and the Auto Contrast icon. The LCH window changes from the image histogram to something more akin to a color spectrum. Want to darken a blue sky? Click the line where the blues are and drag the point downward. Want lighter reds? Click the line in the red part of the spectrum to add an anchor point and drag it upward. The resulting curve shows you which colors are affected by your adjustment. In the example above, yellows and your image and modify light greens are made lighter by dragging an anchor point upward on the curve.
I probably use this option the most to make saturation adjustments to Anchor Point Tool specific color ranges. In fact, you use this Master chroma editor in exactly the adjustment same way as the color lightness editor, but now you also have the option to increase or decrease saturation of any point on the entire color spectrum.
In this example, 4 Use Anchor Point greens are boosted and blues are desaturated. The LCH editor can help solve this problem by protecting skin tones from becoming oversaturated. Anchor Point tool But, if you want to make selective adjustments to the hue in your image, this is the place to do it. As with the Master Hue adjustment chroma editor, you can make overall hue changes or limit Hue Map them to certain colors. Rotation tool Moving the curve maps a color from the baseline value to the new point on the spectrum.
Essentially obsolete with the advent of Highlight and Shadow Protection Sliders in Quick Fix, but can be applied in an Edit Step if desired, or if local application is needed. Color Balance Basic controls for adjusting brightness, contrast, and color in an Edit Step. Most often used during soft-proofing to make global changes to color balance. Color Booster Allows you to increase saturation globally in a way that is not overpowering.
For example, how many times have you struggled to make an adjustment because correcting one part of your image ended up making other parts of your image look worse?
Local adjustments are effects applied to certain parts of your image while leaving other parts alone. Both methods are valuable and have their own specific strengths and weaknesses. By creating selections in Edit Steps, it means you can transform every effect in Capture NX2 from a global one to a local one. The ramifications of this transformation are huge. Need to brighten a face? Use a local adjustment. Capture NX2 selection tools make it possible to create special effects or simply make improvements to your image that you might otherwise have to do in another application.
By staying in Capture NX2, you can, in many cases, keep your image in the NEF format from camera to print and save time otherwise spent switching between editing applications. Note the opacity slider underneath the toolbar. You should see the entire image turn green.
Using the fill tool selects the entire image; the green color is the mask view 5 Select the Remove Tool showing the selected area. The green fill is removed. The Marquee and Lasso tools in Capture NX2 work a little differently than those you might be familiar with. These tools alone do not define a selection, per se. Use the lasso to make free-form selections; the various Marquee tools are used to create defined shapes.
Creating a Selection with the Lasso or Marquee. The selected area will be filled in green, showing that it is now an actively selected area. The fill is applied outside your selected area. The green mask is removed from the area defined by the lasso. You can modify lasso selections by holding down the shift key add or option while using the lasso tool.
This represents the area affected by the selection. When you choose an adjustment to place in the Edit Step, the mask view will disappear.
There are three ways to view Edit Steps that have selections applied to them: Hide Selection: Selection mask is not shown, showing you the image as it would appear normally with the effect applied. Tip: You can toggle the different views by right-clicking the mouse in the image Clockwise from top right: Hide Selection view, Show Overlay, Show Mask. The gradient tool helps blend your effect so that it appears natural. Slide the transition point to define the length of the transition zone. For example, you might want to apply a selection to a large expanse of sky. To match settings between Selection Control Points, use the Duplicate command.
With a two-button mouse, you can use the contextual menu by right-clicking on the Control Point. Drag the new Control Point to where you want to place it in the image right. Show Mask view shows the effect of the two Selection Control Points; the selected area is in white. This is how the tools interact with each other. The Base Mask cannot be applied until a selection tool is added to the Edit Step. Base Mask has Selection Control Point added. Base Mask added– overridden by Selection Control Point.
You can link multiple adjustments into a single Edit Step. This technique is very handy with local adjustments if you want to apply more than one effect to the same selection area. A common trick in the field to even out high-contrast scenes was to use a graduated neutral-density filter. The overlay view will disappear. In this image, the sky and mountains can be darkened. After you created the Dodge and Burn tools on the previous page, you might want to use the same effect on other images.
Rather than manually adjusting the Edit Steps each time, it is a tremendous time saver to create a Settings File of your Edit Step s and apply it using the Batch tool.
This is the only step you want to save. When you are finished, the new setting will be stored in the batch settings list under the Batch icon. Make sure that only item checked in the Save Adjustments dialog is the setting you want to save.
The Control Point approach to making selections is fast and intuitive. Creating a selection that would normally require several minutes or more of mask work in Photoshop can be done with a single mouse click in Capture NX2 using a Control Point. Color Control Points and Selection Control Points both use the same technology, and so both create selections in the same way. The difference between these two tools is that while Selection Control Points simply define a selection in an Edit Step, Color Control Points have a suite of tools built into them for adjusting local color, brightness, and contrast.
A simple rule is that if you are making adjustments to light and color that require a complex selection, Color Control Points should be your first choice. One last thing about Control Points: not every image needs them, and those that do often only need a small number of Control Points. It can be very tempting to start adding Control Points in all your images. Remember, sometimes less is more. Each slider controls a different adjustment parameter.
The most commonly used controls are the Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation sliders, which are visible by default. Selected areas are shown in white. The main slider attached to a Control Point adjusts the size of the effect. The size slider determines the relative distance from the control point that the effect is spread over. This will give you a feel for how the tool is making selections.
Put the control point on a diverse area of the image, and the selection changes dramatically. Notice how the moon top was not selected, as it did not match the pixel information in the sky. You can add more than one Color Control Point to your image, but it is important to know how multiple Control Points interact. When you place two Control Points in the same Edit Step, they will act to cancel each other out in areas of overlap.
This property of Control Points is actually quite useful. Notice that the face turns black. If you want to create additive effects with multiple Color Control Points where effects are not cancelled out , then use separate Edit Steps A second Color Control Point placed on the face chooses the skin tones, and for your Control Points. Then the effects will overlap. Control Point behaves as though all its sliders are set to zero.
While you cannot add to the area selected by a Color Control point, you can use the minus brush to remove the effect from parts of your image. These are the protected areas that the Color Control Point can no longer affect. Rather than adding another Color Control Point and trying to manually adjust each slider to match the settings of the original point, you can use the Duplicate command to make exact copies of your Control Points.
Place a Color Control Point on your image and adjust the sliders to your liking. As an alternative, you can right- click on the Control Point and choose the Duplicate command from the contextual menus. Move the duplicate point to where you want to place it in the image bottom. Color Control Points are my go-to tool to recover shadow detail in photos taken of people wearing baseball caps where the face is in the shadows.
The best part about using a Control Point for this effect is that it looks totally natural when applied correctly– and it is ridiculously easy to apply it correctly.
The unfilled circle on the triangle represents the current color of your control point. Turn the wheel to adjust hue, or place the dot wherever you want in the triangle.
You can use the eyedropper icon to pick out a color point from anywhere on your image. Click the eyedropper icon and then click an area on your image that has the color you desire. It is very easy to get unnatural looking results. Click and drag the edge of the color The eyedropper icon lets you pick a wheel to change hue. Opening the Swatches Panel gives you access to commonly used colors.
No longer do you need to use a separate pixel editor program to edit your image simply because of a dust spot. The Red Eye Control Point is used to remove the red-eye effect sometimes seen in indoor flash photos. Of course, not all my images will need these tools, but it is nice to know that they are there when the situation presents itself.
It makes removing dust spots absolutely painless. Auto Retouch Brush in 1 Open the image action Notice the dust spots in this image. Adjust the size of the Auto Retouch Brush using either the size slider that appears beneath the toolbar, or by After Auto Retouch Brush using the keyboard shortcuts [ or ].
Repeat for additional dust spots, offending seagulls, or anything else that is small and distracting. Tip: Keep your sensor clean One way to get rid of dust spots is to have a clean sensor. Obviously, if your horizon is level in the image then using the straighten tool makes little sense. Use the Straighten tool to correct tilted images. Drag the Straighten Tool across the horizon line or other reference point.
Some lenses, especially super-zoom lenses and wide-angle lenses, will produce images with slight distortions. You can use the Distortion Control Tool in Capture NX2 to correct distortions in your images caused by lens aberrations.
Note that white areas appear around the image. You can change the fill color using the Fill color tool in the Edit Step. Drag the slider to the right to correct barrel distortion. One way to use the Crop Tool is to help improve your compositions. Remember, the Crop Tool does not resize your image. Use constrained cropping to maintain a particular aspect ratio for your image.
Use the in your image. As anchor points on the corners and sides of the crop frame to resize it. Click the Enter key on your keyboard or double- click inside the crop area to set the crop.
You can remove a crop at any time by deleting the crop step from the Edit List. Not to worry; the effect will stay applied in exactly the same place you originally put the Control Point. Warning: Placing Control Points after cropping If you place a Control Point on your image after you have cropped it, and then later decide to delete the Crop Edit Step, the Control Point will not only move in your image, but its effect will be replotted, as well.
I strongly encourage you to crop after all Control Points have been added to your image to avoid issues. In addition, if you install 3rd- party filters, like Nik Color Efex Pro, these items will be displayed in the Filter Menu.
This of course allows you to apply Filter Effects globally or locally. This filter will darken the complementary color to the color you choose.
For example, a yellow filter will darken blues in your image and lighten yellows. This is a filter that I use very little, if at all. Colorize Use the colorize filter to overlay colors onto the image. Use the color selector or eyedropper tool from the Colorize tool to choose the desired color. Black and White Conversion Use this filter to convert color images to black and white.
The filter option works in the same way as the filters in the monochrome settings in Picture Control. These filters will show up in the Filter Menu, and are also applied in Edit Steps. The filter options you see will depend on the version of Color Efex you have installed. By now, you have probably noticed that when you disable in-camera sharpening in Picture Control, your image looks quite soft. In Capture Sharpening, you need to consider our camera. Second, you must also consider our subject matter.
Output Sharpening happens as the very last step in the output stage of your workflow and takes into consideration the size and destination of your image. A small image destined for the web will be sharpened much differently than a 16×20 inkjet print.
Capture and Output Sharpening are applied as global adjustments. In between the two sharpening steps, it is an option to perform some selective sharpening or blurring of our image to get a desired effect. Noise Removal Depending on your camera and how you use it, noise may or may not be an issue. Every camera manufacturer has its own approach to noise removal, but one thing is constant; removing noise can cause a loss of fine detail in images.
Your sharpening settings will be impacted by any noise removal settings you use, because these two processes are effectively working against each other. Therefore, it is important to be able to adjust sharpening settings in the context of noise removal. In my opinion, leaving noise removal up to the photographer is a good thing. If you plan on using any of these programs some of which are quite good , do not sharpen your image at all, and do all your noise reduction and final output sharpening in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
First, it provides excellent control over image sharpness. Second, Capture NX2 automatically applies USM only to the luminosity channel of your image, reducing the appearance of color shifts and other artifacts.
The third, and possibly nicest feature of sharpening in Capture NX2 is the fact that sharpening becomes a non-destructive process. While there are ways to sharpen non-destructively in Photoshop, those techniques are far more complicated and require bitmap layers that can easily double the image file size.
Think of it as a master volume control for USM. Radius: This slider changes the distance over which the USM effect is applied. A small radius sharpens fine detail, a large radius sharpens overall shape. Threshold: The threshold slider adjusts the sensitivity of the USM tool to differences in tone values between adjacent pixels. The value you enter is the number of tonal steps that any two adjacent pixels must differ by in order to be affected by the tool.
A threshold of 0 would sharpen just about anything in the image; a threshold of would sharpen almost nothing. Make sure Picture Control sharpening is set to zero 0. When should you use Noise Reduction? When can you skip Noise Reduction? If you apply NR to your image, consider using a lower amount of USM, with a higher radius and threshold than you would normally use. This setting will help prevent your USM step from re-sharpening all the noise you just tried to remove! Intensity is on the left side of the table, and sharpness 5 settings are listed at the top. The intensity slider functions to blur image data, especially in the chrominance color channels, which helps to 10 remove the appearance of noise.
The sharpness slider reduces the blur from the intensity slider, but it does so primarily from the luminosity channel. The trade off of most NR tools is that it is easy to remove color chrominance noise 25 without harming image sharpness; if there is luminance noise grain , removing it destroys detail significantly.
Usually, there are areas in images that have detail we wish to preserve, and other areas which are out of focus or where sharpness is not critical, like skies. Make sure sharpening is turned off and that you have not performed any sharpening on the image. Adjust the intensity slider so that the color noise is removed. The image will look smeared. There are two methods for resizing images: resizing while resampling and resizing without resampling. Resampling allows you to set the image resolution by interpolation while also scaling the image.
When you use resampling, the dimensions of the image, in pixels, changes and the file size will increase or decrease. Resizing without resampling will keep the pixel dimensions and file size constant; resolution will change depending on the size you make the image.
The method that you choose will depend on the final output size and destination of your image. The other side of the image will be adjusted proportionally. Resizing without resampling will change the image resolution but keep the file size in pixels the same as the original. Resizing with Resampling will allow the File Size to grow or shrink, depending on the image size.
Note that the original The most common use of the Crop Tool is to produce an image that has a particular aspect ratio. Common picture frames, however, come in the aspect ratio 8×10, 16x Set the aspect ratio to 8x Use portrait orientation for vertical shots; landscape orientation for horizontals. This will add a High Pass filter into the open Edit Step. When you are saving an image for the Web or email, you need to make it smaller and convert it to the sRGB color space. This procedure will do just that. Use relative colorimetric intent and black point compensation checked. The print dialog will open. This will allow Capture NX2 to control the color settings. Higher quality settings result in a larger file size. In the JPEG save options dialog, you can set the compression amount to vary file size. You can change this directory in the Capture NX2 preferences. Use the Open With Certainly, Capture NX2 puts a tremendous number of tools at your disposal. The other way to speed up image processing in Capture NX2 is to take advantage of its automated presets. Other images require special handling, but the majority of my editing steps happen in mere seconds.
In just one or two clicks of my mouse, I can apply Edit Steps that contain my most commonly used adjustments. The Save Settings dialog box will open. I save my settings to the default location. Check the box next to the step you want to save. Make sure all the other steps are unchecked. This is useful for making changes to Picture Control Settings without having to expand the Develop Section. Make sure this is the only option selected, unless you want to save other parameters.
You can access all your saved settings from the Batch Icon in the Edit List. All you need to do then is make the adjustments to the Edit Steps as you see fit. The Settings preferences dialog will open. Note: If you move the location of a Settings File, it will no longer appear in the list. This will permanently delete the file from your computer, so use this option with care! By using the versions tool, you can store multiple instruction sets for each NEF.
